The Rise of XR:  Challenges, Key Findings, and The Use of AI

According to a recent report from XR Today, businesses are increasingly embracing extended reality (XR), highlighting its transformative potential. This report provides a detailed snapshot of the adoption, successes, challenges, and feedback related to augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), AI, and perspectives on the future of XR technologies with findings from over 200 industry professionals. This blog will highlight key statistics and conclusions from the report regarding organizations adopting XR, use cases, and overcoming potential challenges.

The Surge in XR Adoption

84% of organizations are either using or considering XR technologies.

With a growing awareness of XR’s capabilities and a desire to leverage them for immersive training experiences, it is no surprise that many respondents are using or interested in investing in XR technologies. With recent advancements in XR technology, including large organizations like Meta, Apple, Sony, and Valve investing in high-quality headsets, the quality and experience surrounding implementing XR technologies have become more attractive for organizations. Also, the integration of AI is boosting XR deployment, making it cheaper, easier to implement, and valuable for businesses.

Key Use Cases Driving XR Growth

The top XR use cases identified in the report include training (36%), collaboration (30%), education (30%), and customer experience enhancement (26%).

Businesses are leveraging XR for a variety of impactful applications. Organizations most commonly use XR technologies for skill development and employee training. Furthermore, collaboration and education suggest that XR technologies can enhance collaboration or educational opportunities within an organization, providing immersive learning to strengthen teamwork efforts.

Overcoming XR Adoption Barriers

High costs, technical complexity, and user resistance are among the most significant challenges of XR deployment.

Despite its benefits, some organizations face challenges in adopting XR. High costs, technical complexity, and user resistance are the most prominent challenges organizations face when adopting XR technologies. Organizations with a limited budget may struggle to justify the expense of high-quality XR technology, including the high cost of implementation, the initial investment in hardware and software, and content creation costs. Furthermore, organizations may not have the XR experts required to create high-quality content, leading to user resistance, as employees can struggle to get a grip on the XR technology needed to develop, train, and implement content.

However, businesses are willing to invest more in XR, with 66% planning to increase their XR budgets over the next 12 months, which signals a clear shift toward the adoption of XR technologies.

AI’s Role in Enhancing XR Experiences

As AI implementation increases in organizations, XR experiences are becoming more simplified and enhanced.

  • 71% of respondents believe AI is driving and simplifying XR adoption.
  • 50% expect AI to improve overall experiences of XR technologies.
  • 40% believe AI can lead to more effective and efficient programs using XR training solutions.
