Free eBook: How Video-Based Practice & Coaching Are Transforming Employee Performance

Have you heard of the 10,000 hours rule?

The 10,000-hours rule says that if you look at any kind of cognitively complex field, from playing chess to being a neurosurgeon, we see this incredibly consistent pattern that you cannot be good at that unless you practice for 10,000 hours, which is roughly ten years if you think about four hours a day.”

-Malcolm Gladwell

Luckily, becoming proficient at something doesn’t have to take ten years if you have the right coach.

K. Anders Ericsson did a study considering the 10,000 hours rule and his research revealed that the coaching abilities of a student’s teacher are just as important as the number of hours a student practices.

Building on that knowledge, Ericsson devised a concept called Deliberate Practice

The principles of Deliberate Practice can easily be applied to any skill you’re hoping to improve; and, they’re also the foundational concepts we used when building Rehearsal, our video-based practice and coaching platform.

In our recent eBook, How Video-Based Practice & Coaching Are Transforming Employee Performance, we break down the 5 Principles of Deliberate Practice and talk about how modern technology enables us to use those principles in new ways, for better and more efficient skills development. As mentioned, our video-based practice and coaching tool, Rehearsal, follows the principles of Deliberate Practice. But what exactly do we mean by that?

Here’s a quick breakdown of how Rehearsal works.

  1. Mentors can create video-led scenarios, based on different skill sets, and assign those scenarios to learners.
  2. Learners can then practice on whatever device they’re comfortable with (e.g., computer, tablet, mobile app).
  3. Once they’re satisfied with the video, they submit it.
  4. The video goes back to the mentor for further coaching and feedback. There’s also an option for machine learning feedback.

That’s a very high-level summary of how Rehearsal works. Once you get into the tool, you’ll see it also has very powerful features that enable automated workflows and personalized learning. Plus, with artificial intelligence features, you can allow learners to move forward at their own pace without potential delays from busy mentors.

Companies like Paychex, 3M, and Honeywell are using Rehearsal for successful sales enablement and soft skills development.
