Halloween is right around the corner, which means this is the week everyone is googling “last-minute Halloween costumes” and “easy Halloween costumes” or maybe even “work-appropriate Halloween accessories.”
Never fear, we have 7 eLearning-related Halloween costume ideas that will make you the star of your department party, even if you’re the only one who dresses up. Perhaps especially if you’re the only one who dresses up. Don’t let those Halloween grinches get you down!
eLearning Halloween Costumes
1. eLearning Rockstar
This is pretty much the ultimate Halloween costume, in our humble opinion.
All this requires is an orange shirt (preferably an eLearning Brothers shirt, say from eLBX Live or any conference we exhibited at) and some KISS style face paint. Bonus points if you accessorize with 80’s hair (wig or not) and an instructional design book or manual.
KISS makeup kits are usually available at Halloween stores, and you can also find tons of tutorials on how to do the makeup online.
2. The Spinning Pinwheel of Death
If you use a Mac, you are familiar with the rainbow wheel that signifies impending doom. In my personal opinion, there’s nothing scarier than seeing that wheel appear on my screen.

There are a few ways to dress up as the spinning pinwheel. A rainbow umbrella makes an excellent spinning pinwheel of death because you can spin it in front of you. Another option is to dress up in rainbow clothes and carry a grim reaper scythe. Bonus points if you cartwheel around places to really get the spinning effect. You could even make this out of poster board!

We’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest ways to dress up as your favorite authoring tool. Check out these options:
3. Adobe Captivate
When it comes to Halloween costumes, there's almost nothing easier than adding straps to two pieces of poster board and hanging them over your shoulders. Adobe’s software icons are already square and incredibly recognizable, making Adobe Captivate a great candidate for this option. All you need is some poster board and a printer or some green paint and a steady hand to replicate the logo.

Bonus: Turn it into a group costume where everyone represents one tool from the Adobe Creative Suite!
4. Lectora Online
You’re going to have to break out the glue gun for this one, but it will be worth it. Find some white clothes that you’re okay never wearing again and start gluing on pillow stuffing in big clumps. This is the “cloud” part of your costume. Then you just need to print out the Lectora Online logo, tape it to your torso, and you’re done!

A glue-free option would be to wear a blue shirt and a white tutu as the cloud part. (Tutus are tried and true last-minute Halloween costume options.) I also found some much more involved cloud costume tutorials if you are feeling VERY crafty. On the other end of the spectrum, Amazon sells cloud-patterned adult onesies if you really don’t want to do any work.
5. Storyline Rise 360
At the beginning of the movie Up, the elderly man attaches a massive amount of balloons to his house to make it float up and away. That’s the inspiration behind this Rise 360 costume.

All you need to do is inflate a bunch of balloons, tie them in a bundle and tie all the strings to a headband or around your waist, so it looks like you might rise up into the air at any moment. You could add the Articulate Storyline logo to make it more obvious.
6. dominKnow
This one is so easy—just go as a domino! You can actually buy domino costumes online (who knew that would be a thing?!), but they’re simple to DIY too. All you need is a black shirt, black pants, and some white felt. Cut out circles and lines in the white felt and glue them onto your shirt like a domino piece. I think it would also be fun to wear make your domino navy blue instead of black, to match the dominKnow brand colors, and maybe add their logo onto your back to make it really obvious what you are.

This would work well as a group costume, too. Everyone could have different numbers of dots.

7. Bloom’s Taxonomy
Grab 5 coworkers and each of you dresses up as one of the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy:
- Remember
- Understand
- Apply
- Analyze
- Evaluate
- Create
I would have each person pick a color and dress completely in that color, and then have an accessory that represents each level. For example, an encyclopedia for remember, a fake brain for understand, a hammer for apply, a magnifying glass for analyze, a judge’s gavel for evaluate, and a paintbrush for create.
You could take it a step further and each create a superhero whose power is one of the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and create superhero shields and costumes for each level.
