At eLBX Live 2019 this past June, eLearning Brothers instructional designer Brandie Jenkins gave a great presentation on social learning.
Social learning theories emphasize that learning is with and from others. In social learning environments, learning happens through direct and indirect contact.
Even in eLearning experiences, learning doesn’t have to end on a course conclusion page. If the goal is to truly immerse learners in deeper levels of learning, we shouldn’t consider reaching the end of an eLearning course the end at all. Instead, think of it as a process or journey you’re taking your audience on.
An interchange of knowledge and perspective among groups
Relationships that support constructive learning
Active learning influenced by cognition, environment, and behavior
A cognitive process that takes place in a social context
A synthesis of knowledge that is personal to the learner
At eLBX Live, Brandie covered different types of social learning, including social polling, coaching and mentoring, gamification, leaderboards, and Q&A sessions. She gave examples for how to incorporate each type into your learning and development program.
