No-Shave November is a month-long event during which participants abstain from shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation and raise cancer awareness. It’s also sometimes called “Movember” and the focus is more on mustaches than beards.
It might sound a little crazy, but this is a real thing! The No-Shave November website explains it like this:
“The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.”
(To be honest, I think there are also many men who use No-Shave November as an excuse to give their girlfriends for why they won’t shave…)
Many people credit No-Shave November for aiding in the rise of beard culture over the past 5-10 years.
There are numerous clubs and organizations across the globe dedicated to celebrating beards. In addition, you’ll usually find multiple beard oil/mustache wax/fancy razor vendors at any farmers market or craft fair these days.
Many beard clubs host beard growing competitions for charity, complete with different beard—and mustache!—style categories and silent auctions and more.
I went to one once.
It was an experience.
I did not know beards could grow that long.
And the mustaches...
Let me just say that some of those men definitely spent more time on their facial hair grooming than I spend on my hair styling in the morning.
Hot Tip: One key thing about beard culture that you should definitely be aware of during No-Shave November is that bearded men do NOT like it when strangers come up to them and ask to touch their beards. This is a no-no in much the same way that pregnant women don’t like it when strangers want to rub their belly. (If the bearded man is your friend, though, you can get away with it.)
After all, no eLearning course is complete without a bearded cutout character, especially in November. Today, I’d like to introduce you to our winners!
There’s really no contest here. Jared’s beard blew the competition away. Look how full it is! You can't even fit the whole thing into his headshot here!
Dennis made a strong showing with this beard, but it’s not quite as long as Jared’s, placing Dennis squarely in second place.
Beards shouldn’t get all the glory. Jagan went all-in with a dramatic mustache AND beard.
Let’s face it, not everyone’s office will allow them to grow a full-on lumberjack beard, but you can’t go wrong with some neatly trimmed facial hair like Raymond's classy beard and mustache.
Embracing gray hair is very on-trend right now and Karun is proudly rocking that white beard!
And an honorable mention goes to Ted for having such a great mustache, even if he didn’t grow a beard to go with it.
